I Don’t Get It…

The Houston Center for Photography is having a fine art auction of prints, which you can check out online here. There are many great prints there, some very beautiful work.
But a few leave me confused. I don’t get them. Some are almost snapshot like to me. Just … I don’t get it.
I guess that is the thing about art though. It is all subjective.

Fine arts often leaving me puzzled. I’d like to take a class to see if I can get it–but it seems to me that art is in the eye of the beholder, just some of the beholders have degrees and clubs. *Shrug*

Christine – I think you do get it. Your work speaks for itself. Maybe… just maybe… it is the other folks who are all wrong about it.
Or maybe it’s just that your snapshots are as good as other people’s gallery work. But all-in-all, those “snapshot” will not go down in history as great photographic masterpieces.

I agree w/ Syd – as someone whose sister is an artist (degreed painter, university-level fine arts professor & MFA director), I have seen the process closely & some of this stuff is labeled fine art only becase the artist was able to pull the wool over some critic’s eyes with an elaborate project or artist statement or use their fine arts degree to validate their work.
