Lost…

Posted on November 28, 2004 by Christine | 25 Comments

FireFox has decided to lose all of my bookmarks. All of them. Everything. I normally use a bookmark blog to save them, but for awhile I wasn’t – I had a lot of things saved in bookmarks, and now … gone. Even all of my bookmarklets are gone – no more “Press It” bookmarks, no Delicious bookmarks, no sub with Bloglines, nothing. I don’t even remember what all was there … it’s just now gone. I guess I’ll remember when I go to use it and I can’t find it.

It’s just so stressful when you lose things like that. Trivial, but still stressful.

Help! I thought that Firefox was so great. So why did it lose your bookmarks??!!

No idea. It’s never happened to me before. I could also blame it on the wonky laptop that has issues with shutting down – so I’m not really pointing the finger at FireFox. I think the laptop just flipped out and lost them.

I did a full backup not long ago, but I think I’ll be storing more and more links at del.icio.us instead.

Hi Christine. They should still be on your computer even if Firefox isn’t showing them. Try going to:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

and look for a file called bookmarks.html. If that’s there, you should be able to re-import them back into Firefox. I think. I hope. Good luck.

Oh, man. I’m so sorry. You might try the Bookmark Backup extension – it saves bookmarks and settings… I have it mirrored on my site (http://confettifalling.com/bookmarkbackup.xpi) because the original site seems to have disappeared. It won’t bring your bookmarks back, but for next time…

One thing I neglected to mention in number 3 above, depending on your setup, you may have to show hidden files or system files or whatever those are called or your computer.

Doh. That happened to me in Mozilla several times about a year ago. But my old work computer was a little wonky, and Firefox was still called Firebird. Or Phoenix. It hasn’t happened to me in a long time, but I still do an “Export” from “Manage Bookmarks” from time to time. And I save an offsite copy on my server, just in case.

Firefox lost my bookmarks also. I am just about ready to just use I.E. again and forget Firefox.

UGGH!! Just happened to me. I’m using portable firefox on my USB drive. I safely removed the device, used it in another machine, then plugged it back in. All gone. :(

ME ALSO . . . that’s it, ANY browser out there gets just ONE chance to NUKE 6 months worth of bookmarks. Its back to IE and/or Opera for me . . . with ALL there other shortcomings neither has EVER scortched all bookmarks . . . that just sucks. [p.s. thanks Marie for ur suggestion, that's why i came here (i.e. potential solution/work-around) but, alas, didn't work for me . . . they are just *POOOOOF* gone] dear MOZO, drop me a line, in a couple years, when you figure this out.

Yip, I also lost my bookmarks after using Firefox for a day. Looks flashy, but not stable it seems. Back to good old IE.

“My (thousands) Firefox Bookmarks disappered too … just tonight after an improper shutdown. Back to Ie.”
The problem comes from Windows shutting down too soon, not with Firefox being unstable. It relates to the timing of when Firefox saves bookmark data during a session. However, I agree this *is* a major issue (though not one regarding stability) that will be fixed in the near future.

Me and my business partner both lost our s yesterday. We both had unexplained WIndows crash and rebbot thne our bookmarks were gone.

I have windows 2k. Rarely ever crashes…as a matter of fact that might have been my only crash of 2005. Now, both my partner’s and my windows crash on the same day and we both lose our bookmarks. Coincidence? I think not

This is an old thread… but, at the end of 2007, I’ve also experienced this (Firefox bookmarks disappearing).

I have also recently been having my PC (WinXP SP2) spontaneously resetting — and it always seems to be Firefox bookmark files that are corrupted/gone. Coincidence?

I have no way to know for sure it’s Firefox triggering the resets (I also started using Apache/MySQL/PHP on the same machine around the same time as FF), but it never used to happen……. I have up to date virus scanning etc.

I’m going back to IE for a while, and see if the resets stop.

(Too bad, I liked Firefox and I’m no big IE devotee.)
