You Would Tell Me, Right?

Posted on December 17, 2003 by Christine | 28 Comments

Our firm Christmas party is tomorrow night. There will be a White Elephant gift exchange; the kind with nice gifts – not gag gifts. We have a $30 spending limit. Everyone at work always comments about how much they like the lotion that I make but they have never seen the holiday soaps. So my big plan was to make a nice gift bag with several holiday soaps, a nice vanilla candle, a stress relief heat pack for your shoulders and a back massager thing. Is that cheesy though that I’m making the soaps that I’m including? I mean – I sell them. If I bought them, I know what they would cost. So that’s ok, isn’t it?

I haven’t made soap in awhile, and had forgotten just how much fun it can be! Especially creating new things – I got a flying pig mold earlier this year and I think the new soaps I made in it are going to be adorable! I’ll post a photo tomorrow when they are ready. My snowflakes and my Celtic knot hearts look wonderful too!

White elephant thing here as well tomorrow. I went with the old standby – the Starbucks gift certificate. We had a $20 limit and I figure, everyone’ll use it!

Definitely not cheesy, I think it’s very nice to include something you made in the giving. Your time is more valuable than the $30 anyway.

I think you should include them. Just because you know how to make them doesn’t mean they don’t have value.

Besides, if you could pull Godiva chocolates out of your ass, I’d take those.

I was wondering about your soaps the other day, and if you were still doing them… the flying pig mold sounds great, and I think that someone you work with would be tickled to receive a hand-made gift made by the Fabulous Christine. :)

Dude, it’s no cheesier than the handmade scarf I’m giving my Secret Santa giftee Friday. Everyone should be so lucky to get something handmade!

Are you kidding? If you use your soap sales as a tax write off, giving your product as a gift is a tax write off! Depending on who it is – I always give my product away as a gift. I want them to use my spa products and not walgreens! :)

Definitely give the soaps… I think that’d be the best possible thing. Of course, you’re already doing it now so my view doesn’t matter much but the time you put into somethign makes it worth so much more.

I’ve been giving out my soaps for gifts like crazy this year, and they’re going over quite wonderfully!

They are all made, but I’m still waivering about including them in the gift goodie bag. I don’t know, it’s all about the presentation – and I can’t figure out how to present them right. *sigh*

Em, I’ll work on getting you those Godiva’s, ok?

Em can have *those* Godiva’s!! I’d prefer some ones that came from a box (but that’s me being picky! :-)

Go for the soaps! I’m sure that you will think of the proper presentation!!

Hmmm… you don’t make your soaps out of human fat from liposuction, do you? :P

I hope you are inspired with a presentation idea, because I’m sure your coworkers would LOVE to get some of your soap! As someone who has used your fabulous soap, I can say this with complete confidence.

(Your package is still coming, I’m sorry that I haven’t sent it out yet. I suck.)

Oh, flying pig soap? Did I read that correctly. Sounds fantastic. I think it would be a great white elephant gift!

I think that is a GREAT idea! I would love that.

Isn’t a White Elephant gift supposed to be a “gag” gift? One year I got one of those hand held grip strengtheners but the hand grips were shaped and painted to resemble a burlesque danacers legs, complete with spiked heels, stockings and garters. Of course I gave this away the next year, but that is what I thought the spirit of a White Elephant was. Am I wrong?

I don’t think it’s cheesy at all – you make beautiful, professional products that people pay good money for.

I’m on the horns of a similar dilemma – we have a £5 limit on our presents, and I’ve been given the name of a person who I don’t know very well, but I’ve been told is a keen photographer.

I wanted to do something nice for her like get her a nice photo book, but they were all too expensive, so I hit on the idea of giving her a photo a month for a year, and a frame to put them in.

My problem is that I wonder if it will make me look cheap/cheesy/pretentious/ superior if I give her 12 of my photos and a frame to put them in…

Opinion is divided. and I don’t know what to do…

Anyway, go with the soaps, really, just lob them in a basket with some shredded tissue paper or somesuch.

I have to give a $10 white elephant gift this year. I only know one person! I went and bought a basket and wrapped everything in there, put a nice bow on it and called it finished. Christine, don’t stress about this, everything always looks good when it’s an exchange! *HUGS*

I don’t think it is cheesy! I clicked over to your soap site and they look great! A gift set from Bath & Body Works isn’t cheesy, and yours look just as good. So – go for it! The basket you are making sounds great.

That sounds like a wonderful gift. Fun for you and the recipient!

not at all! i think you should definitely get them. besides if someone knitted a scarf or something i am sure that would be the same thing as if you bought it, and i would guess that at least the women in the room will love to get something useful like lotion!

That’s so not cheesy. I’d love to get something like that. Sounds like a wonderful, thoughtful gift!!

I think that’s a wonderful idea! *I* would be excited! (your soap is so great, my sisters loved it when I gave it to them last year!) :)

It’s the thought that counts. The fact that you made them yourself instead of buying something from a store adds something special to the gift.

If I were them I would love to receive your soaps! I know I love them! Also, I made one of my beaded necklaces for our white elephant gift. It was a hit!
