Like Wind Through my Ears…

Posted on December 15, 2003 by Christine | 12 Comments

While reading Promo’s recent post about Talk Radio Streams, I was reminded of an odd quirk that I have. I can’t listen to talk radio. At all. I can’t listen to it in the car – it makes me carsick. I can’t listen to it at home – it sounds like the Charlie Brown teachers – “mwuaha mwah mwaaah mwah…” I can’t focus on it, I just don’t get it. It’s actually not just talk radio shows – I mean, I would love to be able to listen to them – but I also can’t listen to baseball games or football games on the radio. Even when I knew who every player was on the Astros and what position they played, I couldn’t handle it.

I’ve discovered over the years that I learn the best when I see things and hear them – if I go to a class where someone lectures and writes on the board at the same time for example. I can also pick up a lot of things from reading. For some reason, I must have a visual aid though – and talk radio just doesn’t work for me.

Is it just me?

(P.S. – Illness update: fever gone, temps normal. Lumps in throat and glands still huge. Doctor’s appointment at 2:00.)

You’re not alone, though if you put talk radio on in the car with me, it’s the quickest way to put me to sleep. It’s like an instant sleeping pill.

Listen, better radio is just mowisodfjaiewrj

than reading, or other forms of oral communication.

isn’t it interesting that people’s learning styles vary so dramatically?

I’ve never thought about talk radio before, but I know I simply cannot listen to a book on tape. In one ear and out the other with nothing retained at all. Now that I think about it, straight lectures in college put me to sleep, too.

There are two main types of learners – visual and auditory. I fall into the visual. Like you, I need to see things – pictures, diagrams, words. Someone lecturing at me just doesn’t do it. I’m the same way with audiobooks. I think I process half of what I hear. When I read, I’m much more focused.

    Feel better soon!!

I only listen to talk radio when my husband is on deployment or gone for some other reason doing Marine Corps training. It helps to keep me company, especially when I can’t sleep at night.

But I’ve never listened to a book on tape or CD though I’d like to. I’ve tried buying one on our many cross country trips, but the hubby doesn’t like it. He’s like you, he can’t stand to listen to people yapping on the radio. Well, except for Paul Harvey.

Ew, I HATE talk radio! Years ago I worked with a bunch of men who were glued to it 24/7. It drove me positively insane. Especially around the time the OJ trial started! Oy!

Kenny listens to AM talk radio ALL he time – he even has a radio in the shower. It gets too conservative for me and they rally start to annoy me b/c of their pompous attitudes.

I used to listen to the BBC but now I am in love with NPR… it rox! I listen to it on my way to and from work! I love 88.7!

    (P.S. Hope you feel better)

I am a very visual person too. You are not alone in that.

I have the same problem! I can’t help it. I end up tuning it out. I’m not sure why. And football or baseball games on the radio put me to sleep.

I like talk radio, in fact I search for it when NPR switches off in the morning. However I HATE sports on the radio, it is probably the most annoying sound in the world, like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Ugh – Talk radio is so annoying. Why can’t they just play music. Here’s an example of my own experience: http://kateswordoftheday.blogspot.com/2005/02/bargain.html
