Maybe I Should Just Let it Be…

I’ve been listening most of the morning to The Beatles 1, which is a collection of their #1 songs. 27 songs, and I love almost all of them. But I just don’t get “Yellow Submarine”. Why was that song a hit? Is there something obvious that I am overlooking? Because it bugs me. I don’t like that song at all. It’s just strange and it doesn’t make any sense. I just don’t get it. But maybe I should just let it be … yeah, let it be …

I like that album, too. I wasn’t around when the Beatles were really big so I’m not sure I can explain why “Yellow Submarine” is a #1, but I’ll give it a try from my own perspective. I like it mainly because it’s sort of whimsical – just picture a bright yellow submarine for a minute and you’ll see just how funny it is.
I think the song was actually part of a movie or a mini-movie or something as well. (I also seem to recall someone mentioning that “Yellow Submarine” was written in the height of their “drug phase,” but who knows what that means…) Like I said, I wasn’t around back then so I’m not positive about any of that.
(I’m the sort of Beatles fan that’s content with owning just the greatest hits album, which is what “1″ is.

There was a cartoon film based on the song — IMDb has info here. Supposedly it’s about pills. Ask Ringo.

The film is better than the song. Definitely better with drugs…supposedly.
Have you heard the new release of Let It Be, “Let It Be…Naked”? I haven’t yet, but the idea of an unremastered version of the album – the songs as they were recorded – intrigues me.

I saw “Let It Be…Naked” at the store last night, and listened to some of the clips on Amazon earlier. I picked up “1″ though because there were more songs on it that I liked.
I vaguely remember the cartoon, now that you mention it. The song just bugs me though – I need to remember to just skip that track on the CD. No more #15 for me!

as a fan geek of duran duran during my teen years i would have to add ‘the reflex’ to the list of songs that make no sense or were written while on a massive amount of drugs.

Paul got the idea to write the song Yellow Submarine “in a twilight zone.” He said: ” I was just drifting off to sleep and there’s that nice twilight zone as you drift off. I remember thinnking that it would be a good idea to write a childrens song. I thought of images and the colour yellow came to me and a submarine came to me and I thought ‘That’s kind of nice; like a toy, very childish yellow submarine.’”
Donovan is said to have given a little help to the writing of the song Yellow Submarine, when Paul was missing a line for his number about the sub. Donovan contributed “sky of blue, sea of green, in our yellow submarine” and the line stayed in.

KDE – there is a Duran Duran Greatest Hits out now too! I picked it up last night at Best Buy, but put it back down and stuck with my Beatles CD. Can’t go wrong with classic Beatles!

I’m showing my age here, but I totally remember watching “Yellow Submarine” when I was a very young child. It was weird. Anyone else remember the “Glove”? Freaky drug-induced stuff, for sure. But I just love the Peter Max style artwork. (He did the concept drawings for the movie.) As far as the song goes, I loved it as a kid but hate it now.

I love that cd too but you are right about the yellow submarine…don´t really see a point to it and even if there was one it would still be a bad song.

Heh, this may date me, but I think it was rumored to be about drugs.
It seems tame now, but the whole artwork, and psychedelic nature of the song, album and cartoon were VERY out there.

Hehe, about 99.999999% of the Beatles songs in that time period were about drugs – well, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration. ‘Yellow Submarine’ was actually written sometime in 1965 or 1966, before Sgt Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, or even the Yellow Submarine album (which came out in 1968).
If you want to listen to an awesome Beatles album, go pick up Revolver. Just remember to skip track #6, as that is Yellow Submarine

‘Let it Be…Naked’ is awesome. I always disliked the extra crap that Phil Spector put on some of those songs, especially what he did to ‘The Long and Winding Road’ and ‘Across the Universe’. I love that new Let it Be album.
(Yeah, I’m a huge Beatles freak. I’ve even taken a Beatles class before, when I was still in college! It was awesome!)
