I Think I Might Cry…

Posted on March 15, 2003 by Christine | 26 Comments

Syndirella is working well, don’t get me wrong. But then I installed NewzCrawler which Lisa recommended to me and all I can say is … WOW. Add to my amusement – just now as I pulled up her site, Newzcrawler told me that her site has an RSS feed. I think I’m going to cry.

Plus, any site that includes the Lockergnome Bits & Bytes the second I install it has to rock.

Jennifer pointed out that several of the sites she added to her news reader just showed excerpts for posts, not the full post – so it really isn’t much of a help to her. If you want me to read your site during the week, I beg & plead … update your RSS feed to include the full post. I’ve linked to the template at least 3 times this week, so you really have no excuse. I promise, I will come to your site and comment still. I’ll be happy, you’ll be happy, and it will all be good.

Well different versions of RSS have different post/excerpt rules.

Oh sure… I JUST (and I mean *JUST*) posted about RSS – and said that you told me download syndirella – and now you’ve switched on me… Fine! ;-)

Isn’t it amazing? And if you have any newsgroups you keep track of (or want to), you can read them inside the program too!!! :) Oh, and you can blog straight from there too :)
I added a bunch of entertainment and technology news feeds to it, so its got EVERYTHING I could ever want in it. (except Mozilla integration ;) !!)

Scratch that… seems MT died during rebuild and ate my post. Can I cry now?

Christine- Sorry about the double pings. And thank you for spreading the word about the wonders of RSS. (You convinced me to give Syndirella another try. Now you’re going to get me to try NewzCrawler.)

ok – synderilla I downloaded – had feeds up and running right away. Newz Crawler, I downloaded and the interface just plain scares me. I tried to add a feed under a “My blogs” folder and the first tab is asking for username and password?? and the other tab, I put the url in for your feed and it says it can’t find it (I’m sure it’s something I did – I just can’t figure out how to make it work). Grrr… as you say “it’s making my eyes bleed”. LOL!

I’ve changed my feed to include the whole body (at least I thought I did – I followed your helpful instructions) but my feed of my own site is still just the excerpt version… and I’ve tried removing and adding my feed again. It’s just in the description tags that you change MTEntryExcerpt to MTEntryBody, right?

chris – I tried the same thing – used MArk’s 2.0 template, and changed MTEntryExcerpt to MTEntryBody but it’s still just showing the excerpt even after rebuilding indexes. I feel like such a dope – any ideas on how to fix it Christine?

I thought I was up on things, but I am relatively new to blogging (started my blog in late January). What is all this rss and xml stuff that you and others are talking about? What’s it for? I mean, idunno. Do bloggers need to have rss xml in order for people to read their blogs? What am I missing out on? From reading a few blogs, this whole rss xml thing sounds HARD. Should I bother? I’m just… lost. (please don’t smack me) :)

I see full feeds for both of you, Chris & Craig. Index.xml in Newzcrawler and it looks GREAT!

Laserone, it really isn’t hard at all. If you’re using MT, it’s a matter of replacing a template – it took me longer to log in to MT to do it then actually replacing it did. No, you don’t have to have an RSS feed (or XML feed, or whatever it’s correctly called) but I’ve found that with working as much as I have been these past few months, it really helps me surf blogs. I get updated when you update, I read it in my Newsfeed reader, and from there I can hit your site and comment if something catches my eye. Basically, I am fed your posts. My “regular” surfing is left for the weekends, but this allows me to stay on top of things on a much more regular basis.

I’ve been using NewzCrawler since the Loverly Lisa told me about it. It’s faboo! In fact, I’m using it right now to peruse your blog and post this comment…

yeah, i tried newzcrawler too, but the thing i really like about syndirella is the ability to setup a feed based on HTML, for people that don’t have rss. that and it’s FREE.

did i mention it was free?
