They Say It Gives You Good Body…

They say that beer gives you good body, but I always thought they meant your hair. You know, bouncy, beautiful, full of body hair. Now There’s Beer to Wash Away Your Troubles and you can find out what it does to your body too! A German brewery has developed a brew you can wash with. “The beer cloaks bathers in a delicate aroma of malt.” Mmmm… just what I’ve always wanted! [via VieuxBandit]

I’ve actually owned and used beer shampoo. it rocked, and it was even in a plastic ‘beer bottle’.

although as a former bus boy and bartender in a night club, I’ve had the ‘delicate aroma of malt’ permeate every pore, and that’s not something i’d really care for. yuk.

I was just coming to post that my mother had that beer shampoo too! It was called “Body on Tap” and it did look like it was in a beer bottle. This was like, 1978. I remember I even tasted it, and it tasted nothing like beer. What dorky kid tastes shampoo??

Actually, they mean it gives you A good body. Like, the more you drink, the more “body” you get. Well, specifically your gut.

Where can you still buy Body on Tap Shampoo, and don’t say the Country Store in Vermont or Out of Africa trading, because they don’t have it. Also, why did they take it off the market?

clairol was the original producers of body on tap, they had discontinued it after short 5 years because of liability with it being associated with alcohol.

I have been trying to find Body on Tap Shampoo for a long time. I did find an excellent recipe for beer shampoo that works really well and gives great body. It actually smelled like Body on Tap when I was done. It can be found on Goldmine recipes — under Beer Shampoo recipes. Boil beer down to about half its consistency and add to inexpensive shampoo — I used Suave Clarifying and a litte John Freida volume enhancing shampoo for honey/caramel colored blondes. It really works!

When I think of Body On Tap, I think of my best childhood friend, the way it smelled and when you turned the bottle upside down, the bubbles looked like a lava lamp. Very cool!

Hi,

If anyone would like to order Body On Tap Shampoo here are some contacts. I have 12 bottles arriving from South Africa shortly.
Jenni@beds-on-line.coza
Another contact which will have stock of the 2&1 in March is,
Outofafrica-win@shaw.ca
This store has the reg shampoo and conditoner. I like the 2&1. The man name Winston said he just shipped some to Ohio. Good Luck and let me know if anyone has ordered. The shampoo is still the best. Karla

I am just very interested in finding and buying body on tap shampoo and conditioner, it was the only shampoo that I would use, it made you hair look and smell so great. And the smell didnt go away after just a few minutes, it lasted forever. I had gotten so many compliments on how great my hair smelled when using body on tap. So if anyone really knows where to buy it, I would really appreciate the info. Thanks

I actually still have VERY LITTLE left in the original bottle. Don’t laugh… I have used a small portion every once in a while just to get that smell in my hair. I mostly just open it up ans smell it though. I’m hoping they put it back on the market. It seems like an african company bought the rights to this shampoo, adcock Ingram healthcare, I just rifled off a letter to them letting them know that there are millions of us americans who are looking for this product and that it would be a wise decision if they re-introduced it to the United States. we’ll see.

How ironic to find this website. I was just searching for my favorite shampoo from Jr HS. I was able to locate an online retailer (importer in Canada) and I just purchased 3 bottles each of shampoo & conditioner at this site:

http://www.outofafricatrading.com/

seems pricey in comparison to it’s late 70’s sticker price, but still costs less than what I’m using now (Sebastian.) I will post when it arrives :) I miss that fragrance!!!

Constant & continuous failed searches for Tame over the years has led to to seek out another successful “cream rinse for thin, fine, straight, blonde hair. Yes, the color of your hair dies make a difference. You see, us natural bolndies cannot use products which are green or we turn into “green haired wonders.” Old “pearl tested” thick Prell didn’t turn our yellow heads green, but those days are long gone. Citre’ Shine INSTANT Conditioner is the closest in smell and performance, to Tame, I think hair like mine will ever hope to find again. Unfortunately, it too is now becoming harder and harder to find. I too loved Body on Tap. Keep on checking the shelves when you’re on vacation out of your own “region.”

I too have been looking for the original Clairol Herbal Essence. I found a single bottle of it at the grocery store a few years ago…with ‘discontinued’ sign under it…was a long time before that since I’d seen it. I use it sparingly!! This link was *supposed* to provide us with the ability to purchase it on line http://www.vmafullfillment.com/dms-html/Clairol/index.html When you click on ‘Add to cart’ however, says that ‘This product has been discontinued’. Grrr. I’ve a half a bottle left, better make it last me.

Both of us would be interested in buying cases of the sweet smelling shampoo and conditioner so if anyone knows of where we can purchase it please, for the love of good hair let us know! I am interested in finding Body On Tap, Tame, Small Miracle and especially Silkience. One other that I don’t see mentioned is Breck Shampoo and Conditioner. My mother used to swear by Breck when I was a kid. In my opinion, the Outrageous Conditioner smells much like Silkience but definately not as good. I think that the manufacturers should put these and any other products that have been taken off the shelves, back on the shelves. At least try selling them again every once in a while to see if there is a market for them. Different generations may like them. I know I did and I found that the products I mentioned did work better than most of the ones today.

This has been such an interesting site - although I don’t remember ever using Body On Tap shampoo in my 49 years, I did use alot of Tame creme rinse, and have an interesting story to share with you. When I was ten my mom and I were in the store buying Tame creme rinse. Taped to the sides of the bottles were these psychadelic-colored wide tooth combs, the “Tangle Tamer” comb, as a special promotion. They were a heavy plastic comb that came in either orange and yellow swirled or green and blue swirled. Well, I still to this day am the proud, albeit obscure, owner of the original orange and yellow “Tangle Tamer” comb from Tame! I only came upon this website because I wanted to look up the comb to see if I could find anything about it or Tame. Nothing on ebay. Wonder if my little comb is worth anything? It still looks like new and has never chipped, faded or broke. I love it! But if anyone is interested, I might part with it for a good price . . . can’t help anyone with finding Tame or Body on Tap. I used to use Long N’ Silky in the 70’s - anyone remember that? It was really nice. I also used to love that deep blue Halo shampoo; it smelled really good. God bless!

I remember my mother buying Body on Tap shampoo at Kmart when I was little. I loved it, the smell and the way it made my hair feel. I wish that it would be sold in stores again in Canada. I’m certain that there would be not only the 70’s generation, but a whole new generation, who would certainly be happy and appreciate Body on Tap Shampoo. I’ll definately be contacting a Proctor & Gamble about it!! Hope to see it on shelves soon! Cheers to all past Body on Tap users!

My son (16 yrs old) and I were discussing “my generation” differences from my teens to today. During this fun, light-hearted discussion I said “and you missed out on body on tap” beer shampoo. He laughed and thought I was nuts as I described this shampoo. So…remembering those years ago and the comments that I got on my hair prompted me to look. I ,too, am amazed at how many posts are here. We must continue to prompt P&G to remarket this product. I truly doubt today’s teens will remember a particular shampoo or fragrance when they are in their 40’s. Let’s work together to give them something simple like shampoo to reminisce about.

Hi! I am glad to know I am not the only one out there trying to find great shampoos the bring back wonderful memories…Gee your hair smells teriffic and body on tap!

If I have any luck finding these items other than ebay I will let everyone know…I am afraid to purchase the body on tap from http://www.outofafricatrading.com in fear it will be the new formula I’ve read about here on the board. Has anyone ordered it recently?
Also, does any one know why jergens discontinued “Gee your hair smells terrific” ?

i am almost sure body on tap was originally made by bristol myers and i first saw it in 1978 and last used it in 1985.
these shamppos now stink and are marketed to appeal to asian women and others who like smells of fruits and foods. body on tap did not smell like beer to me and i certianly drank enough beer in 1985 while in the navy but it had an incredible smell that i never smelled again. also in 1980 andrew jergens made a shampoo called “spring feeling” which had springwater in it and it was off the shelves by 1982

i i never knew white rain was an old shampoo when i first used it in 1984 and it too had an incredible smell. all these shampoos stink now lbut like music they can bring back memories.

I Think Seattle Guy Is Right About “Body On Tap” Shampoo Being Made By Bristol-Myers (Later, Bristol-Myers Squibb) However, Bristol-Myers Squibb Did Own Clairol In The 70’s (Sold To Proctor & Gamble In The 90’s) However, It Was One Of The Company’s Personal Care Products At The Time. Among Toothpastes, Vitamins, Mouthwash And Deodorants(The Presonal Care Lines Were Sold-Out To Various Other Companies) As For “White Rain” It was Sold By The Gillette Co. To Diamond Brands Along With “TONI®” Home Permanents. Tame Creme Rinse Which Was Also A Toni® Product Has Not Been Seen In The U.S. Since The Sale. But, Other Toni® Products Were Purchased By Other Vendors. SUN-IN™ Spray-On Sun Lightner Was Sold To Chattem Labs, Happy Face Washing Cream To Lander Cosmetics. So, Tame™ Could Be Anywhere.

Hi All, I know of a wonderful cream rinse. I used to love Tame too! I was thinking of asking Vermont Country Store to try to find it. They do get some of the older products in if they can find them.

The cream rinse that I now use, which is FABULOUS is found at this site:
http://www.rapunzelsthelonghairsalon.com/

The cream rinse is George Michael cream rinse - is pink- and in a large bottle. They also have a GREAT deep conditioner and a weekly conditioner. My hair is very long and wavy. Their products allow me to get a comb through my hair without pulling out half of it!

They ship me the products so I know you can order from them. I make a trip to them twice a year - as they are the only ones that I will allow to touch my hair. Hope this helps!

I’m changing products a little bit. Does anyone remember how good Wildroot Cream Oil used to smell on little girls hair back in the 50’s and 60’s. It smelled like a light perfume and when a child had it in her hair you could tell-it was wonderful and made your hair shiny. They still make Wildroot and it has original scent-but I beleived it had a more perfumy smell when it was in the yellow black an white box

I too am a Big fan of the old hair products like Body on Tap, Tame , and Gee your hair smells terrific. I also remember as a girl the perfume and body spray called “Loves Baby Soft”. I was fortunate enough to find this in a store that went out of business. I guess it was found in some old inventory because I hadnt seen this in years before this. I would love to find these items again too and I keep looking on ebay with the hopes one day I will get lucky. Thanks for this site and the trip down memory lane!!!

Hi I saw a few of you were lokking for Silkience shampoo and Conditioner. I buy it from my grocery store in Roscoe, Illinois. It is sold at Highlander groceries which is owned by Kroger. They also have White Rain . It knows comes in different formulas (extra body, extra moisturizing) but it works the same on my hair as it always did. I think it may have a new fragrance but it still smells great.

Why in the world don’t the marketers ever pay attention to how many people want the old shampoos back???????

I actually found this on a hard-to-find site. Proctor & Gamble SA now makes it. There is a phone on the bottle: 0860 112 188; this bottle does list formaldehyde as an ingredient. It worked good enough I’d buy it again, but not exactly the same smell, results as I saw with the original

Found the receipt! You can purchase “new formula” Body on Tap Shampoo, Conditioner and Shampoo/Conditioner combo at this link:

http://www.outofafricatrading.com/products.asp?subcategoryID=23

just copy link into your browser (site is Out of Africa Trading in Canada-shipping was a tad high). Note, it IS reformulated (”new improved!”); it does have a nice smell and leaves hair shiny and very soft as the original did. not the same, but it is worth a try. Never used the conditioner and would love one that does not leave long 45 year old hair frizzy!

I am a great believer in purchasing brand name shampoos/conditioners But will try just ANYTHING at least once. Just about 2 months ago I bought my very first bottle of Body on Tap shampoo & conditioner and absolutley loved it!! From the smell to the texture that it left in your hair when finished, it was great. It honestly has been just about the best shampoo that I have purchased and would recommend it to anyone! Unfortunately since moving back abroad I am not able to purchse it anymore. Is there a US website that I could get it from???? Thanks!!

I too would love Gee your hair smells terrific and Body on Tap to return with it’s original smell. It has been years since I used it but man oh man can I still remeber that smell. I to emailed procter and gamble and asked that they bring it back, they weren’t convinced and told me that it wouldn’t happen. Fools, I would stock up on both shampoos.

BODY ON TAP was made by Bristol Meyers and marketed for about 4 years.
It was pulled from the shelves not because of any inference to alcohol, but simply because it didn’t sell that well. People who loved it LOVED it, but there were not enough of them.
My roommate worked as a saledman for Bristol Meyers, we had a seemingly unending supply. When it went out of production all the sales people hoarded all they could.

You probably got scammed just like I did. I got something, but it definitely was NOT Body On Tap. I got some kind of runny, golden colored stuff. It didn’t stink, but it smelled cheap. It sure wasn’t the original Beer Enriched BOT. Watch out for this seller. They do state in their ad that the shampoo will be shipped in water bottles. A LEGITIMATE seller would sell you the original bottle with the original shampoo in it and not make you pay EXTRA for the empty bottle! The bottle that my bogus BOT came in was one of those 16.9 oz. water bottles. I’ve been trying to contact this seller for over a week and no response. I’m opening a dispute with eBay tomorrow.

ahhh Body on Tap! short and sassy, gee your hair smells terrific! Flashback to being an 11 year old girl! I don’t know what popped into my brain, but suddenly, I was remembering Body on Tap, the smell and how thick it was. Of course, I have to Google it and find out how much it is missed. I also used another Beer Shampoo, but can’t remember the name of it for the life of me. It wasn’t shaped like the Body on Tap bottle, but it was a beer shampoo. I think it had: Miss__________Beer Shampoo&Conditioner in the title, it was definetely a shampoo and conditioner in one, but not nearly as thick. I am in Canada, so I am not sure if it was an exclusive Canadian product or not. I am going to check out the Vermont Country Store and see what I can find. This is a great site! I am thrilled to see that I am not the only one missing Body on Tap!!

I, too, thought I was the only one who knew of Body on Tap shampoo. My hair has never been the same since its disappearance from the shelves. Though, I’m sure age has more to do with it. Thanks so much for all your tips on how to find it again!!!

I have used and purchased this shampoo for years but then could not find it and longer. I am longing for this product to be produced again.

Body on Tap made my hair smell wonderful and no it did not smell like beer. It had this clean fresh scent that I would most likely die for if again this product was on the market.

Body on Tap also made your hair smooth, no frizz, and shiny, really beautiful, IT DID LIVE UP TO EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED IN A SHAMPOO.

Here is the story of how I found the product. My freind had it and I wanted it but being from a not so rich family I had to found employment to purchase, but my first bottle came from my Mom, she told me, “here Sandi I bought this for you but use it sparingly because it was expensive for us”, so when I did use it all, I asked my grandmother if I could come to work with her so that I could make a little extra money to buy things that we as a family could not. (I worked as a floor girl in a Coat Factory in Philly) So, off to work I went, and my first pay check went to buying 3 bottles of BODY ON TAP, because I did not want to run out.

As I got older I noticed that it was no longer on the selves, I miss my favorite shampoo. Wish I couls find it again. So , if anyone knows were I can please email me at ssanchez999@msn.com

Thanks for the memories
Sandi

Yes, I agree that it is a thinner consistency than the original. I still have some of the original I bought from Satooz in Australia (S. African manufacture) in 2004 and this new batch is thinner and lighter. But it still smells GREAT and “gives your hair good body.” We’re talkin’ puffy, okay? lol

I was shopping at Dollar Store last week. I always look for brands I know rather than the poor quailty brands they usually sell–not to mention their names….

I see Silkience and it triggers a memory. Bought a trial bottle of shampoo and one of conditioner–as sort of a $2 gamble. What a payoff!!! It is fantastic. I have long straight hair and have been paying $4+ a bottle for good shampoo/conditioner that my grown daughters tell me to buy. I went back and stocked up on Silkience. May go back and buy more.

I saw the ebay sale of Silkience. Forget about it. Go to Dollar Store. You have have to visit more than one to find it.

A whole range of Body on Tap shampoos are available on the shelves of most shops in South Africa. This product is manufactured and distributed by Procter and Gamble SA Trading. It is however a far cry from the original Body on Tap advertised as brewed with a third real beer. It does not even smell the same. I hope someone can bring the original product back. IT WORKED!!!!
