You Know You Have Arrived…

Posted on October 30, 2002 by Christine | 20 Comments

Robyn & I discussed awhile back when one of her blog designs was stolen that you know you have arrived when someone does that to you. Well, today is my day.

This site is my main design here and this one is my design at Pixelog. The appropriate people have been notified (namely the site owner and the hosting company). It amuses me to know end that on the blog site they actually left the comments linked to my site! Wow, now THAT is some creative coding!

Come on people. We strive to have unique designs and layouts. It is so upsetting to see someone steal them. If you need help – ask. Hire someone to create something unique for you. But don’t just take the code. That’s just not cool.

Update: The owner of the sites wrote me back with an apology (and they wrote to Jennifer too, since she designed Pixelog.) The sites have been removed and all is right in the world.

Someone asked how I found the sites in the first place – Blogomania offers a variety of stats for the hosting accounts, and I was reviewing the “Latest Visitors” stats and the site owner was directly linking to my images for the background, so it was showing up there.

Unbelievable! AT least show a little creativity! I always wonder how people find those sites, does it show up in the stats?

It sucks doesn’t it? I guess to some people originality is a dead concept. But it appears the pages have been removed from the thief’s server already so at least the free hosting company has taken action.

At least those people took their sites down and apologized… I had a guy steal my stuff one time and then try to say that he wasn’t in the wrong. He was taking my design and IMPROVING on it. Ha!

I am surprised that people who go through the trouble of stealing designs aren’t more careful when publishing it on their own domains. CRAZY

Wow, that was definitely very quick work from the person to have taken it down already. That always stinks when people do that. :(

seriously. I know if someone emailed and asked me, I’d probably let them use it. But don’t go blatantly ripping it off.

Actually – no need to report it to pirated-sites.com – they took it down and it happened in October 2002 …

Imitation is mother of all creations … I guess

Yes, you can’t create anything out of a void and “imitation” is always good exercise. I’ve pretty much hijacked somebody else’s project but he’s rather flattered with it:
